Aerating a pond

Aerating a pond. is it a good idea?

Why, the fish wont get thirsty?

Well that's true but fish breath oxygen which is dissolved in the water, the warmer water gets the less oxygen it can hold.

So how do you do it?

There are several options available

The easiest is to put a venturi nozzle on your pond filter outlet, venturi nozzles have a constriction and in this constriction there is a small pipe which should be mounted above the water surface, water passing by sucks air in through this pipe and mixes it with the returning water.

The next option is to consider a fountain, almost all fountains will put air into the water, but the best are foaming jets, they work the same way as a venturi nozzle but put a lot more air into the water, but also require a higher pressure to do it.

An "ordinary" fountain will work but not as efficiently but the higher it goes the better.

The last option is to use an air pump, it does "exactly what it says on the tin"  in that it pumps air, but you do need a diffuser, the most common diffuser is a special air stone,

To the left is an air stone, (not all air stones are this shape  / size)

There are also air "rings" and a whole heap of other shapes, all do the same thing, diffuse the air into smaller bubbles, but air stones do wear out and or get blocked. Some manufacturers now make plastic "air stones".

The choice is yours
