Pond pump problem (Genuine question complete with spelling mistakes)

when i plug it in it doesnt work and when i unplug it and accidently touch the pins on the plug i get a massive electric shock. i coudlnt tell you what make or anything it is, i got it off a friend and is a fair few years old. worked fine till a few months ago ... i have got my self a replacement but it isnt as good. any ideas on what causing the problem? i think it muct have something to do with the electrics in side the pump but cant get into it

The only thing I can think off would be something like a fault diode, which would send the current back down the wire, I know you use diodes in small circuits, but i'm not sure they would be used in pumps etc.

Because a motor actually generates its own electricity, it's just like a dynamo, so a diode has to be put in place to stop it flowing backwards.

Its true what they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. First of all we said years ago on our rcd page "If it is a submersible pump throw the pump away! (pond pumps etc are sealed anyway, so you can not open them)  DO NOT attempt to repair it. A pump may cost several pounds and can be replaced, A life is priceless and can not be replaced."

Secondly the part regarding generating its own electricity and diodes regarding pond pumps is absolute rubbish.

What amazes us, is the fact the first person wanted to repair the pump, the second person had no idea what he was talking about either.

Taken from another forum (2009)

i have just got back from my local garden centre, and they was tipping the display load of led outdoor lights, so i had them! freebies,  well there is no transformers with them, is there any way i can rig them up to run off one transformer, i have no idea as this was just a random freebie so at worst i can use them as ornaments lol they was 40 quid each to buy but have about 6 or 7 for nothing

There were a lot of replies, debating what you really can or can not do with a bunch of LEDS, Although the replies were true (for once) they were of no help to the person who asked in the first place, some other replies said "can not see what all the fuss is about" Those people are like the first person, they do not have a clue about electricity and how dangerous it can be, at least the first person said they knew nothing. One person did actually say "The question you have to ask yourself is why did the garden centre throw the lights away in the first place?"

Although free stuff, sounds good, you should ask yourself,  do you know what to do with it safely? and do you really Need it?

So if you join a forum take most replies with a "pinch of salt" and where electricity is concerned, ask for professional advice.
