Hose pipe ban

hose pipe ban in your area?

Some area water authorities have issued hose pipe bans what can you do?

The following is in relation to ponds fountains and water gardens only. It is also not to be taken as the word of the law.

Here are some general questions.

Do i have to drain my pond water feature or fountain?

NO! the ban is only concerned with water use. If you already have a full pond, water feature or fountain you do not have to drain it since it is already full.

My pond is losing water can i use a hose just to "top it up?"

NO because you are using a hose. If your pond etc is losing water you should find out why and cure that. You may want to see this

(some water authorities will let you use a hose to fill your pond)

I have just brought a water feature, I know  i can't use a hose what can i do to fill it?

Simple answer is a bucket or watering can, most water features have a sump that can hold a couple of gallons at most.

Can i use old washing up water to refill my pond etc?

NO, any "used water" (also called grey water) will contain chemicals / detergents that will kill any fish / wild life, not to mention all the bubbles you will get.

MY fountain / water feature has no livestock can i use old washing up water to fill that?

No, because any aeration be it a jet or waterfall will agitate the detergent and you will end up with a feature full of foam / bubbles and need loads of clean water to get it out

Can i use water from a water butt?

Tough one this, as it depends on the water clarity / condition, water stored in a water butt can become full of grit, etc from roof tiles, if you want to use it for a water feature i would suggest you filter it first, ladies stockings are actually quite good for this. The water may also be stagnant so i would not add it to a pond unless you are 100% sure

If in doubt please check with your local water authority (preferably via their website)

You may also wish to see the Environment agency website which is here
