Layered water feature
Layered water feature, how we built ours |
| First of all you will need a sump, somewhere for the water to
be caught in to be recirculated. I had some odd sizes of liner
laying around, and an odd space to put it in so my decisions were made for me.
All you need to do is decide where to put your new feature, dig a hole, put some
soft sand in the bottom and the sides to protect the liner then carefully fit
the liner. and at this stage I put in my pump. Now the fun part |

| How do you drill solid concrete without a very big drill and a
big bit? you don't When I made my fountain I used old plastic file dividers.
(Its up to you what the "mould" is made from, since it will only be
used once.) |
The picture on the left shows my file dividers cut up and ready
for filling with concrete. I had five in all, three as layers and two as
supports, one for each layer. Also (not shown) I had five very narrow
"rings" (Instant holes) I laid the "rings on a flat surface,
which was covered in newspaper (To prevent the finished "layers" from
sticking to it.) I then put a smaller "ring" in side each larger
"ring" for the water to come through when finished. After filling with
concrete (I used ready mixed in bags.) I left it for a week to thoroughly dry
out. This is very important since they will be wet all the time and you do
not want them to crumble. After they were all dry a put the biggest layer onto
the sump while pulling the hose pipe for the water through the hole. Then it is
important to make sure that the top of each layer is level before
cementing the next, as other wise the water will not flow evenly all
around. Leave to dry for at least another 48 hours. Last thing fill with water
and switch on the pump sit back and enjoy. |

A few words of caution
As with all ponds and fountains electricity kills! please use an
r.c.d. Also do not make the layers too thin as they will collapse. Also concrete
is very heavy, Do not make the layers too wide as you have to move them from
point of construction to their final place. I have left out specific dimensions
and size of pump because that is up to you. The pump I did use was not very big
since I only wanted the water to "dribble" over the side
