Part P
Part p, what is it?
On January 1st 2005 a new building regulation came
into force, it is called part p (This is not a joke)
As far as water gardeners are concerned basically
it means you can not hard wire anything new for your garden
for example you have no outside electric supply and you want to install
a cable for you pond pump and lights (pre 2005 is not affected)
But fear not, you have 2 options,
1) inform your local building control office BEFORE
carrying out the work (they will the inspect it and issue a certificate)
2) you can have a part p qualified
electrician carry out the work (who must also issue a certificate)
This is the governments idea to stop people doing
things that are dangerous, it is possible that if you sell your house
the new purchasers may want to see the part p certificate
If it is just outside say your back door then plugging
in say a water feature is fine, since you only plugged it in, but be
sure the socket is rcd protected, or you use an
rcd adaptor
This is not to say that you can plug a lead in your
house to run the pond at the bottom of your garden, since the cable will
not be protected, yes you may save a few pounds, but what happens if you
accidentally cut through a cable in a few months with a spade (we have
seen some terrible electrical installations for ponds etc)
There are also available "kits" for supplying
electricity to outside
Do not panic, just do it right
if in doubt consult a qualified electrician
