Pond gravel

Sometimes people want to have decorative material in their pond, it could be to hide the pump cable, or to give contrast to the fish but is it a good idea?

Tiles

How will you secure them? You cant use cement as the lime will affect the ph of the water, and any sharp edges could harm the fish.

Coloured gravel

Any sharp stones could pierce the liner, and you will need a lot of it, even to get an inch thick layer, and if its decorative that will not be cheap. Also if it just sits there it will collect uneaten food and become colonised with anaerobic bacteria (Not good)

Fountain bases

You may see gravel or coloured tiles in fountains how do they do it? Simple there is no livestock to worry about, and if there was the disinfecting agents (chlorine) would kill them.

So if you want gravel or tiles in your pond, you need to seal them in, or make a gravel filter. But before you rush out and make a pond gravel filter (They do exist) bear in mind the gravel should be cleaned at least once a year, that could be a tonne or two of gravel you will have to move every year, still want to do it?
