Water garden questions - liners
Coloured
Liner
We were asked are coloured liners available, yes they are,
(available from selected retailers, but please try a search engine) Before you decide on one ask your self this question. "why do i
really want one?"
In the right place blue is very good for a holding / show pond
/ pool (even better if you have Koi, as it gives good contrast) but
for a regular pond we would suggest you stick to black.
We have seen brown, blue and "sand " colours
available, Most will soon show any "dirt" that
your pond accumulates (it will) this also includes algae, brown liners are inclined to make
the water look "muddy" So are you going to spend most of
your time cleaning it or will you just have regular black?, if you don't
clean it you will soon get a black / dark green liner anyway
The choice is yours
Pond Liner
A friend told me when installing a new liner i should
leave it in the sun, i thought the sun was harmful to pond liners?
Both are right.
To make installing a new liner easier, if you leave it in
the sun it will become more flexible, which will make it easier to handle.
Sunlight will accelerate the destabilisation of a pond
line, but it takes years not hours

Liner folds
Hi, I have a raised pond that is hexagonal I have a flexible liner and
i am wondering what is the best way to get less creases or folds in the
liner, and should i stick the folds down with sealant?
In reverse order. Sealant is not required as the weight of the water
will hold the liner in place.
With any corner the procedure is the same, you just have to fold your
liner into the corner. You should avoid the "hospital bed" method of
folding. That is to say you fold the liner and tuck the excess under,
doing this actually means that you will create a pocket that will be
hiding behind the liner, (it looks nice) but the tip of the pocket will be
lower than the highest point of the liner, so water will run out. So any
"pockets" you create should be on the "pool side" of the liner, not
behind it. When done right you will see a fold / crease in the liner, but
it really can not be helped.
If you have a big budget you can actually have a butyl
liner custom made and "welded" to the shape of your pool, if like most of
us, you haven't a big budget fold the liner as it fills with water and
when completely full cover the top with a suitable material (One that fits
in with the pool design) and trim off the surplus.

Liner price
Why are some liners so expensive? it depends on what the
liner is made of as to its cost. polythene liners are usually good for 2-4
years, (ideal for a temporary pond)
There are also different names for similar materials of
liner, each has its own guaranteed life
The best has to be butyl rubber, which usually has a 25
year + year guarantee.
But what happens if you use a cheap liner? they are fine
for a temporary pool but over time sunlight will break them down, we have
seen some that can only be described as "large black
cornflakes", where they have gone brittle and cracked.
Basically if you are building a water feature if you want
it to last go for the best liner you can afford. You do get what you pay
for.
